The Petrol Prices Melbourne blog is mainly to let people know there's a price hike occurring, which occurs around once of month. Since this is only expected to be around one post a month, I've decided by writing the post and including the post on the more popular JustLocal News blog, more people may see the post and thus the post may assist more people.

To save people time who are only interested in petrol related posts, the News menu item on Petrol Prices Melbourne main page will filter the posts and only show posts relevant to Petrol Prices Melbourne.

In time I expect I will migrate earlier posts I've written here to the JustLocal News blog and then deactivate this blog. I trust this will help more people and not inconvenience anyone too much.
If you're a Costco member and near or passing through Moorabbin, it's good to check their price. The good thing is Costco often influences the price of petrol stations around them. Woolworths Petrol in Braeside currently has unleaded petrol for 111.7, throw in a discount and that's petrol for 107.7. Use the Woolworths petrol app to check pricing just in case it changes.

In Dunne Street Kingsbury there's an independent service station that sets their price based on what they purchase the petrol for and not the peaks and lows of the market. I don't know the current price, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was around 125.9.

There may also be some of the less well known petrol stations that haven't yet put their petrol prices up, and there may be others who have put their prices up, but not to the maximum price of the market leaders.

Good luck finding less expensive petrol.

PS. Don't forget if you're travelling interstate on a flight, check the 7 Eleven fuel app for petrol stations around you and the airport. Sydney prices for example are currently 10-15 cents lower than Melbourne's. With the 7 Eleven fuel app you can lock in a Sydney price and when you return to Melbourne, use that price sometime over the next week. Brisbane prices are even lower around the 108 mark. Perth's prices are also around 10 cents per litre lower.

I noticed a couple of Woolworths Petrol outlets in Coburg area have increased their price of unleaded petrol to 139.9. Sometimes a few people stations jump the gun, but often this indicates petrol prices are on the rise.

Lower prices can be found around the Springvale area. Once the prices start to jump in earnest don't forget to lock in your lowest 7 Eleven fuel price for the following week.
Petrol prices are low at the moment but there's still a big spread of prices across Melbourne from around 101 to 110. If you're passing through the Springvale area you can find Woolworths Petrol with a price of 101.9 for unleaded. Add a petrol discount voucher and you're under the $1 mark, which is pretty good.

The average gate price (wholesale price) has now increased and is above the retail petrol price for many petrol stations. It's at this time we normally see petrol prices start to increase. However the area around Springvale has been well below the gate price for the past week, so it is hard to say when petrol prices will go up, but I suspect prices will probably increase this week.
Today we are seeing the stage of the petrol discounting where prices are now spreading out across my area. The price between the highest and lowest petrol is now at 6.6 cents. Yallambie 7 Eleven has unleaded petrol priced at 136.5, compared with Woolworths Petrol in Doncaster East priced at 129.9.

The spreading of prices for petrol is a normal part of the discount price cycle. When prices peak most of the prices go up to the peak with a small difference between petrol stations. When they reach the low point, prices start to group around the lower point just before the peak occurs. However, as prices drop from the peak we start to see some spreading out of the prices. It is at this time you can easily find 5-6 cents per litre differences.

In hindsight I shudder to think how much money I literally threw away buying petrol at the more expensive petrol stations in the area. These are petrol stations I'd previously used and thought I was buying at a good price.

Now that I'm more aware, I simply pick up petrol when needed, as I drive through areas with lower priced petrol.

Are you as aware as you think you are, of the different petrol prices in your area? I thought I was, but I now realise wasn't quite as aware as I could have been.
With most of the petrol stations now having restored to the higher peak price, if you're still looking for low priced petrol, there's sites and apps that may help.

In tonight's MotorMouth map there's about 8 dark green spots, indicating lower prices. However hidden in the map is at least one quite low price, but you may not know.

The dark green spots in this section of the map are for Caltex/Woolworths Breaside, Caltex/Woolworths Chelsea, Caltex/Woolworths Patterson Lakes and Caltex/Woolworths Seaford North. The current price at these petrol stations are 110.7, 136.9, 136.7 and 136.9 respectively.

A quick way to then know if any of the Caltex/Woolworths petrol stations in the area is a good price, is to use the Woolworths Fuel app.
One thing I noticed about petrol prices in Melbourne is that petrol prices in regional and country Victoria don't always follow the Melbourne prices.

Right now in Geelong there's petrol stations with much lower prices. Also on a trip one surprise was that Bairnsdale has prices significantly Melbourne, when Melbourne had peaked.

If you're travelling to or through these places it may be worth checking ahead of time the petrol prices. A good way to check is to use the Woolworths petrol app on a mobile phone. Set the location to the place you want and then see what the prices are in the area.

I did this on a trip back from Merrimbula and to The Great Ocean Road. In both cases planning to fill up in a location other than the start of my trip saved quite a bit on petrol.
The restoration of petrol prices to the higher peak often takes 2-4 days. This time the restoration was very quick taking around 2 days. All of the petrol stations that I monitor in the Templestowe/Doncaster and surrounding areas are now in the 137-139 range.

There may be a few petrol stations still to put up their prices, but you probably won't find that many.

There's a few petrol stations that have good prices which I'll highlight in future posts.
This morning there were two petrol stations around Melbourne that had gone up to 139.9. At around 7:30 pm there's now a couple of dozen. That's a good sign the prices of petrol around Melbourne are now entering the restoration phase where petrol prices return to a much higher price.

Time to fill up and in a couple days lock in the the 7 Eleven fuel price if you're using the 7 Eleven fuel app.
In this article on my Online Connections news site I explain how you can fake your GPS location on your Android mobile phone. The 7 Eleven Fuel app is a handy app which enables you to lock in the nearest cheapest 7 Eleven petrol price. The 7 Eleven Fuel knows if you're faking your location and you'll be in conflict with the terms and conditions of the Fuel app. So don't use GPS location faking to get cheaper fuel.

However, keep in mind the 7 Eleven Fuel app does allow you to lock in the cheapest of the nearest five 7 Eleven petrol outlets. You only need to be near the petrol station. For example the Waverley Gardens 7 Eleven has one of the lowest prices for petrol at the moment in Melbourne. Normally this is too far away from me to be of use. It will cost more petrol getting there than any savings on petrol. Today however I'll be going to Glen Waverley. That's about 9 km, or 18 km return trip to the petrol station. Again not worth the extra driving.

This is where faking the GPS location can help. By combining a couple of tools I've created I can work out where I would need to drive to to be close enough to lock in the Waverley Garden's 7 Eleven Fuel price without driving all the way.

Some time ago I wrote the Nearest Petrol Station web app. The Nearest Petrol Station web app shows me the nearest 10 petrol stations to my current location. I can limit the petrol stations to just show 7 Eleven petrol stations. Faking the GPS location and then using the Nearest Petrol Station web app enables me to more easily see where I need to be for the Waverley Gardens 7 Eleven to be one of the five nearest 7 Eleven petrol stations. With a bit of trial and error I worked out I simply need to drive south on Springvale Road about 2.5 km, a round trip of 5 km and the Waverley Gardens 7 Eleven would become one of the nearest five 7 Eleven stores. Since the Waverley Gardens 7 Eleven would then currently be the cheapest price, I could then lock in the price.

Remember this is only worthwhile if you don't have to drive very far out of your way. Before using the 7 Eleven Fuel app to lock in a price, remember to turn off the mock GPS location facility, otherwise the 7 Eleven Fuel app may not work, or you'll breach your terms and conditions.

This is also only a technique that is useful to know when the time is right. Last week the Waverley Gardens 7 Eleven was around 10 cents a litre cheaper than the local service stations. This week the local services stations with a fuel discount voucher is cheaper. Timing really does matter.

I hope others find this tip useful.
This past week there's been a large price difference in petrol between where I live and the Springvale area. Where I live the price of unleaded petrol was around 120-122, and in Springvale the price was (and still is) 111.9. That's around 10 cents a litre saving.

Is it worth driving to get the cheaper petrol?

The return distance would be 49 km. If I put this into the Petrol Cost Calculator for a full tank, which for me is 50 km, the cost of petrol for the trip would be $7.49. The savings in petrol at 10 cents a litre would be $5. This shows it certainly isn't worth the trip and doesn't take into account the time spent driving or the extra car usage.

On Thursday I'll be in Glen Waverley which is much closer. Petrol in the area has now dropped to 114.9. The return distance to the Springvale service station is 14.2 km. Again using the Petrol Cost Calculator, the petrol cost of driving the distance is $2.17. The saving at now 3 cents per litre for 50 litres, is only $1.50, so again not worthwhile.

Making a small detour as your driving to save money on petrol may be a good strategy to reduce petrol costs, but making a large trip even for what looks like a large price difference may cost more than it is worth. Even a trip out from home and back to fill up for the next day, whilst may appear to be a small trip, is costing money.

Planning your trips and picking up petrol whilst your out and not making specific trips to get petrol is often a better strategy than making trips specifically for petrol.

To help plan your trips you can use sites like Petrol Prices Melbourne. On the Petrol Melbourne site there's a DIY page which lists sites and strategies that can help save money on petrol.
The current price around Melbourne is around the 120+ mark. Around the Springvale, Keysborough area there are prices around 111.9, 112.9. This includes Woolworths Petrol and 7/11. The Woolworths discount can reduce the price even further, whilst if you're travelling through the area, you can lock in the lower price for use at a more convenient time.
